You can use electricity for lights, refrigeration, cooking,
heating, air conditioning, entertainment and many other things. Many
countries in the world and some people in the United States do not
have energy at the flip of a switch. Our technology has
developed many different methods to produce energy for our use. What
happens when those sources of energy, like fossil fuels or uranium
are all used up? They are nonrenewable
after all and the earth it not making huge quantities of these resources
like it did millions of years ago. Thinking about the energy you
use for daily life might give you a clue about the need for conservation
of energy and natural resources.
So what would your day be like without oil? How would
this effect vehicles that you use? Car, buses and some trains need
oil. Gasoline is refined from oil. Plastics, medicines, clothing
and many products are produced using oil. What about coal or natural
gas?
Do you have a power plant near by that uses these resources as the
fuel they use to produce electricity?
Ok, it’s getting complicated. Let’s see
what your morning would be like without electricity! How would you
know what time to
get up in the morning? How would your breakfast be different without
using electricity? Would you need to have something that was kept cold
for your breakfast like milk? Would you need hot water to take a bath
or a shower in the morning? All these things require electricity -
clocks, stoves, microwaves, refrigerators, hot water heaters.. |
